Make all your Outlook events shorter automatically

Outlook now lets you start events a bit late or end them a bit early - great for travel time or breathing room if meetings run long.

You can set different buffer times for shorter and longer events.

Just a heads-up: settings apply per email account, so adjust them for each one you use.

Here's how to enable it for classic Outlook:

  1. In classic Outlook, select File > Options > Calendar > Calendar options.

  2. Check the Shorten appointments and meetings checkbox and in the dropdown box choose End early or Start late.

      Calendar Options

  3. Use the drop-downs to select the number of minutes for events less than one hour and one hour or longer, then click OK.

For Outlook Web:

Outlook web users can set events to end early or start late by using the following instructions.

  1. Select Settings  Web Settings Icon > Calendar > Events and invitations.

  2. Check the Shorten duration for all events checkbox.

    Web Options

  3. Use the drop-downs to select the number of minutes for events less than one hour and one hour or longer, then click Save.
